New York Times sends Perplexity cease and desist notice

The New York Times has demanded that the AI startup Perplexity cease using its content. According to a Wall Street Journal report the newspaper accuses Perplexity of copyright infringement. Perplexity uses the Times’ content for AI-generated search results. The Times is demanding compensation and the surrender of illegal profits. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said they want to work with all publishers and plan to respond to the lawsuit by October 30.

The New York Times had previously sued ChatGPT developer OpenAI. Other publishers such as Forbes and Condé Nast also accuse Perplexity of copyright infringement.

Perplexity, backed by Jeff Bezos, aims to compete with search engines like Google. The company offers AI summaries and links to sources. According to the Wall Street Journal, Perplexity plans to share advertising revenue with publishers.
