Microsoft and OpenAI have established a financial benchmark for artificial general intelligence (AGI) in their partnership agreement, according to a report by The Information. The companies agreed that AGI will only be considered achieved when OpenAI develops AI systems generating at least $100 billion in annual profits. This definition differs significantly from traditional technical and philosophical interpretations of AGI. The agreement is particularly significant as OpenAI can terminate Microsoft’s access to its technology upon reaching AGI. However, with OpenAI reportedly expecting losses this year and not anticipating profitability until 2029, this milestone appears distant. The arrangement suggests Microsoft could maintain access to OpenAI’s technology for many years, as the profit target represents a substantial challenge for the AI startup.
