Microsoft’s AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has recruited three senior researchers from Google DeepMind, according to a Financial Times report by Melissa Heikkilä. Marco Tagliasacchi and Zalán Borsos, who developed DeepMind’s podcast-generating “Audio Overviews” feature, will join Microsoft’s new AI lab in Zurich. The third hire, Matthias Minderer, will focus on AI vision capabilities. The researchers will work on advancing Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, particularly its ability to handle tasks like flight bookings and calendar management. This move reflects the ongoing competition between major tech companies for top AI talent. Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and joined Microsoft in March 2024, has been actively recruiting expertise in multimodal AI, which can process audio, video, and image content.
