Microsoft is making a multibillion-dollar commitment to expand Mistral’s AI computing infrastructure in Europe, as the two companies broaden their partnership for enterprises and regulated industries.
The agreement gives Microsoft additional European capacity for its cloud and AI services. It also gives customers more ways to use Mistral’s models while keeping workloads, data and operations under tighter local control. Reuters reports that Azure customers will be able to develop software using Mistral data centers in France, adding an alternative for organizations seeking less reliance on US-controlled infrastructure.
Mistral is building out GPU capacity using thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems. The French AI company aims to reach 1 gigawatt of compute capacity by 2030, according to Reuters. Microsoft President Brad Smith said the agreement does not include a new Microsoft equity investment in Mistral.
Models move into Microsoft’s AI tools
Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available in Microsoft Foundry. Medium 3.5 is also available in Copilot Studio. Foundry is Microsoft’s platform for building and deploying AI applications, while Copilot Studio lets organizations create and customize AI agents.
OCR 4 is designed to extract structured information from documents. That could support workflows involving invoices, forms, records and other business documents. Medium 3.5 is an open-weight model, meaning organizations can have more flexibility in adapting it for their own use cases.
The companies also emphasize deployment options. Organizations can build applications in the cloud through Azure, run them in customer-controlled Azure Local environments connected to Microsoft services, or operate them in fully disconnected settings. This is aimed at sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, finance and critical infrastructure, where data residency, resilience and compliance can determine where AI systems may run.
Microsoft and Mistral say they will jointly pursue customer projects, fund proof-of-concept work, provide Azure credits and run workshops.
