Microsoft and Mozilla scale back AI features after user backlash

Two major tech companies are pulling back on AI features in their software following negative user feedback. Microsoft is reconsidering its aggressive integration of Copilot across Windows 11, while Mozilla is introducing controls to disable all AI features in Firefox.

Microsoft faces criticism for adding Copilot buttons throughout Windows 11 applications, including File Explorer and Notepad. According to sources familiar with the company’s plans, Microsoft is now reviewing these integrations and may remove certain Copilot features or rebrand them. The company has paused work on additional Copilot buttons in built-in apps.

Windows Recall, an AI feature that faced severe security criticism, is also under review. Microsoft considers the current implementation unsuccessful and is exploring ways to evolve or potentially rename the feature. However, other AI initiatives like Semantic Search and Windows ML continue as planned.

Mozilla takes a different approach by offering user choice. Firefox 148 will include a new “Block AI enhancements” toggle that disables all current and future generative AI features. Firefox head Ajit Varma explains that this decision responds to community feedback. Users can either block all AI features or manage them individually, including browser translations, alt text generation, and chatbot access.

Both companies emphasize listening to their users. Microsoft shifts away from placing AI everywhere toward more meaningful implementations. Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo states that AI should always be a choice that people can easily turn off.
