Major creative platforms ban generative AI content

Bandcamp and San Diego Comic-Con have implemented strict policies against generative AI to protect human creators. These decisions follow growing pressure from artists who seek to maintain the value of original work. Both platforms have transitioned from flexible approaches to explicit bans on AI-generated submissions.

Bandcamp now prohibits music produced wholly or substantially by AI. The company emphasizes its commitment to human-driven artistry and authentic connections between creators and fans. This policy addresses concerns that AI tracks could flood the platform and displace independent musicians. While the platform allows minor use of AI as a production tool, it forbids the use of AI as the primary generator of content.

San Diego Comic-Con also reversed its stance on digital art. The convention previously allowed AI-generated material if it was labeled and not for sale. Following a significant backlash from professional artists, organizers updated the rules. The new policy states that material created partially or wholly by AI is no longer permitted in the convention art show.

Key motivations for these bans include:

  • Protection of intellectual property and copyright.
  • Concerns over AI models training on human work without compensation.
  • The desire to prevent digital spaces from being overwhelmed by low-quality automated content.

Artists and industry figures argue that generative technology functions only by using the work of human creators. They claim that normalizing AI art threatens the livelihoods of illustrators, writers, and musicians. By enforcing these bans, platforms aim to remain a sanctuary for genuine human expression.
