Lights, camera, algorithm: Netflix bets on Ben Affleck’s vision for AI in film

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI tools company founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck, who will now serve as a senior adviser to the streaming giant. Todd Spangler reports for Variety. The full 16-person team of engineers, researchers and creatives will join Netflix as part of the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

InterPositive, founded in 2022 and based in Los Angeles, has operated in stealth mode until now. Unlike generative AI platforms such as OpenAI’s Sora, the company does not create video from text prompts. Instead, its system trains an AI model on a production’s existing dailies and integrates it into postproduction. Filmmakers can then use it to mix and color footage, relight shots and add visual effects.

Affleck says the tools are designed to keep creative decisions with artists. “We also need to preserve what makes storytelling human, which is judgment,” he said.

Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria described the acquisition as rooted in trust with artists. Netflix’s chief product and technology officer Elizabeth Stone added that the goal is not to make films faster or cheaper but to help filmmakers produce higher-quality content.

Netflix says it will offer InterPositive’s tools to its creative partners and has no plans to sell the technology commercially.
