Huawei launches HarmonyOS 7 with access to 2,000 AI agents

Huawei has unveiled HarmonyOS 7, a major update to its mobile operating system that connects users to more than 2,000 specialised AI agents. Iris Dengin reports for the South China Morning Post that the company positions the release as its entry into what it calls the “agent era.”

Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, announced the platform at the company’s annual developer conference. He said the upgraded voice assistant can understand context, remember past interactions, and carry out complex tasks without user intervention. Examples include generating personalised marathon training plans based on health and calendar data, or remotely locating and sending files stored on a connected laptop.

Key features at a glance

  • Access to more than 2,000 specialised AI agents
  • 90 per cent success rate on complex tasks, according to Huawei
  • 30 to 40 per cent performance improvement over rival operating systems, the company claims
  • Lower memory consumption than competing systems
  • Cross-device capabilities that connect smartphones with laptops and other hardware

HarmonyOS 7 is currently available to developers as a beta version featuring AI coding agents. Huawei plans to ship the full release with its next flagship smartphone later this year.

The launch comes shortly after Apple introduced a significant Siri overhaul in iOS 27. However, Apple’s new AI features are blocked in mainland China due to regulatory restrictions. That gap gives domestic companies like Huawei room to attract users with locally developed AI services.

Yu also said the updated agent framework simplifies AI development for third-party developers, lowering the barrier to building new skills and integrations for the platform.
