Google SynthID adds a watermark to AI text

Google has made its technology for watermarking AI-generated text publicly available. Developers and businesses can now freely download the tool called SynthID Text from the AI platform Hugging Face and Google’s Responsible GenAI Toolkit. As Kyle Wiggers reports on TechCrunch, the technology works by subtly modifying the probability of certain word sequences during text generation. These modifications serve as a digital watermark. Google emphasizes that SynthID Text does not compromise text generation quality or speed. However, the system has limitations: it works less reliably with short texts, translations, or responses to factual questions. The development of such watermarks is gaining importance, as estimates suggest that by 2026, about 90 percent of all online content could be artificially generated.
