Google has introduced a new Deep Research mode for its Gemini chatbot that automatically generates detailed reports on any topic for $20 per month. As reported by Carl Franzen in VentureBeat, the tool offers similar capabilities to OpenAI’s Deep Research feature but at one-tenth of the cost.
The new feature, powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro model, is available through the Google One AI Premium subscription plan. Users can access it by selecting “1.5 Pro with Deep Research” from the dropdown menu at gemini.google.com.
The system works by first creating a research plan for user approval. Once approved, it searches through relevant websites and compiles a comprehensive report with citations. Users can export these reports directly to Google Docs with a single click.
According to Franzen’s hands-on testing, the tool successfully generated informative reports on diverse topics, ranging from scientific subjects like sleep research and new materials to controversial issues like historical conflicts. Reports typically take between a few seconds to 10 minutes to generate.
The feature stands out from competitors not only through its pricing but also its integration with Google Workspace apps. Google currently offers the first month of the service free of charge.
For business leaders, particularly those in knowledge work or manufacturing, the tool can function as a virtual research assistant. It can identify new opportunities, compile industry insights, and analyze market trends.
The article demonstrates the tool’s capabilities through eight example reports, covering topics such as economic history, consumer product development, and technological innovation. Each report includes citations and structured explanations of the researched topics.
This launch comes as AI-powered research tools gain prominence in the industry. While OpenAI’s similar feature requires a $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro subscription, Google’s more affordable offering could make AI-assisted research accessible to a broader user base.
