Google Photos integrates new AI tools for editing with text prompts

Google is enhancing its Photos app with three new artificial intelligence features for easier and more realistic image editing. The tools are powered by Nano Banana, an image-editing model from Google DeepMind that specializes in preserving the likeness of people and pets during alterations.

As Elyse Betters Picaro reports for ZDNet, the “Help me edit” function allows users to make targeted changes using simple text or voice commands. For example, users can ask the app to make someone smile in a group photo or restyle a selfie as a watercolor painting. According to Google, the feature uses images from a user’s private library to create personalized and accurate edits.

Another new feature, “Create with AI”, provides themed templates for one-tap edits, such as turning a family photo into a holiday card. Google also plans to introduce personalized templates based on a user’s hobbies and style.

Furthermore, a new “Ask” button on individual photos lets users request edits, ask questions about an image’s content, or search for related pictures in their library. A user could, for instance, type “Widen the photo and remove the red glare in my eyes”.

The features are currently rolling out to the Google Photos app on Android and iOS in select regions.
