Google has announced that its Gemini 2.5 Pro model is now available in public preview through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio, with Vertex AI rollout expected shortly. According to Google, this model is their “most intelligent” to date and has been priced competitively at $1.24 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
This pricing structure positions Gemini 2.5 Pro significantly lower than competing models from Anthropic and OpenAI. For comparison, Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 for output tokens, while OpenAI’s GPT-4o is priced at $2.50 for inputs and $10 for outputs.
Google made this move in response to “incredible developer enthusiasm and early adoption” following the initial experimental release. The public preview version offers higher rate limits compared to the experimental version, which remains free but with limited usage.
Additionally, Google has enhanced Gemini Advanced with “Deep Research” capabilities powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental. This feature functions as an AI research assistant that can generate detailed reports on various topics. According to Google’s internal testing, raters preferred reports generated by this system over other leading research providers by more than a 2-to-1 margin.
The competitive pricing of Gemini 2.5 Pro reflects the increasing pressure in the market for AI model developers to offer powerful capabilities at affordable rates, especially following DeepSeek’s introduction of lower-cost models.
