Google expands Personal Intelligence to all U.S. users

Google is expanding Personal Intelligence, a feature that connects its AI services to apps like Gmail and Google Photos, to all users in the United States. The feature is now available in AI Mode in Search and is rolling out in the Gemini app and Gemini in Chrome for free-tier users.

Personal Intelligence allows Gemini and AI Mode to draw on information from a user’s Google apps to generate more relevant responses. According to Google, users do not need to provide extra context when asking questions, as the system can reference existing data such as purchase receipts, travel bookings, and photos.

Google describes several practical uses for the feature:

  • Shopping: Gemini can recommend bags that match shoes a user recently bought, including details like matching hardware color.
  • Travel: AI Mode can suggest a tailored itinerary by combining hotel confirmations from Gmail with travel photos from Google Photos.
  • Tech support: Gemini can provide device-specific troubleshooting steps based on purchase receipts, even if the user does not remember the exact product.

Personal Intelligence is turned off by default. Users can choose which apps to connect and can disable connections at any time. Google states that Gemini does not train directly on Gmail or Google Photos content, but does train on prompts and model responses to improve functionality.

The feature is only available for personal Google accounts. Business, enterprise, and education accounts through Google Workspace are excluded.
