A new AWS study reveals that generative AI has surpassed cybersecurity as the primary budget focus for IT leaders heading into 2025. According to the AWS Generative AI Adoption Index, which surveyed 3,739 senior IT decision-makers across nine countries, 45% of organizations prioritize generative AI spending over security tools (30%).
The research indicates that 90% of organizations are now deploying generative AI technologies, with 44% already moving beyond experimentation into production. To manage this transformation, 60% of companies have appointed dedicated AI executives such as Chief AI Officers.
Organizations face significant challenges in implementing AI, with 55% citing talent shortages as the biggest barrier. To address this gap:
- 92% of companies plan to recruit for AI-skilled roles in 2025
- 56% have already developed generative AI training programs
- In 25% of organizations, at least half of new positions will require AI expertise
Rather than building AI solutions from scratch, most organizations are adopting a hybrid approach. The study found 58% plan to develop custom applications using pre-existing models, while 55% will build on fine-tuned models using proprietary data.
Regional adoption rates vary significantly, with India (64%) and South Korea (54%) leading global implementation, compared to the US at 44%. As organizations navigate this complex landscape, 65% will rely on third-party vendors to some extent in 2025 to accelerate their AI implementation.
