Google updates Gemini with automatic memory and new privacy controls

Google is rolling out an update for its AI assistant, Gemini, that allows it to automatically remember details from past conversations. The feature, called “Personal Context,” is designed to personalize future responses without users needing to provide context repeatedly. According to Google, if you previously discussed ideas for a YouTube channel on Japanese culture, Gemini might later suggest a video about Japanese food.

This memory function will be active by default. Users who prefer not to use it can disable the feature in the Gemini app’s settings. For conversations on sensitive topics, Google is also introducing a “Temporary Chat” mode. These chats are deleted after 72 hours and are not used for personalization or to train Google’s models. Additionally, the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting is being renamed to “Keep Activity.” If turned on, Google states it may use a sample of user uploads to improve its services.

The update brings Gemini’s capabilities closer to those of its competitors. Both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude have similar memory and personalization features. However, unlike some competitors, Google’s current implementation does not allow users to view, edit, or delete specific memories the AI has stored. The feature is first launching for the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries.
