China’s AI user base grows to 230 million with Ernie Bot leading domestic market

According to a new report by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), China has reached 230 million generative AI users by June 2024, representing about one-sixth of the country’s internet users. Baidu’s Ernie Bot leads the domestic market with an 11.5% share, followed by ChatGPT at 7% and Google’s Gemini at 3.8%, despite the latter two being unofficially accessed. The report reveals that most Chinese users employ these AI services for answering questions and generating work documents. Over 309 AI products have registered with Chinese regulators, with 190 receiving commercial approval. The growth reflects China’s push to compete with US AI development, though Chinese companies face challenges due to US restrictions on advanced processor sales.
