ChatGPT for Mac gains access to Apple Messages with approval controls

OpenAI has added an Apple Messages plugin to the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. It lets users search and read conversations, draft replies, and send messages through Apple’s Messages app.

Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac that the feature supports iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations. It is available across ChatGPT plans, but only on Apple silicon Macs. Intel-based Macs are not supported.

The integration works in ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI’s environments for workplace use and coding tasks. It does not turn Messages into a way to chat with ChatGPT remotely. It also does not function in ordinary ChatGPT conversations.

By default, ChatGPT asks for confirmation before it sends a message. The confirmation covers both the wording and the recipient. Users can choose to skip this approval for individual conversations, although OpenAI warns that persistent approval carries risks. Its plugin documentation also describes how to revoke access and notes a known issue involving tasks that can disable approval prompts.

The new capability gives ChatGPT access to potentially sensitive personal and business correspondence. Users should therefore review the permissions they grant, especially when enabling message search or allowing the app to send replies.

The update also expands several collaboration features. Pinned chats now synchronize between the Mac desktop app and iOS. Users can create read-only snapshots of local Codex threads and share read-only conversations from ChatGPT Work and Codex on desktop.

OpenAI says personal snapshot links can be opened by anyone with the URL. Workspace links remain restricted to members of that workspace.
