ChatGPT expands desktop app integration capabilities

OpenAI has significantly expanded ChatGPT’s desktop application integration features, allowing the AI assistant to work with a broader range of software tools. According to VentureBeat reporter Emilia David, the expansion includes support for multiple integrated development environments (IDEs), terminals, and text applications. The update enables ChatGPT to interact with popular development tools like MatLab, the JetBrains family of IDEs, and various text editors including Apple Notes and Notion. Advanced Voice Mode functionality has also been extended to these new integrations.

OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil indicated that this expansion represents a step toward making ChatGPT more “agentic,” meaning it could potentially perform tasks autonomously on users’ computers with permission.Users can access ChatGPT while working in other applications through keyboard shortcuts, with “option + space” bringing up the chat interface on MacOS.

The feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, though enterprise and education subscribers need administrator approval.
