Anthropic announced that its AI assistant, Claude, can now create and edit files like Excel spreadsheets, documents, PowerPoint presentations, and PDFs. Users can describe their needs or upload data to receive finished files directly within the chat interface, moving beyond simple text responses.
According to an official post by Anthropic, this feature allows Claude to perform complex tasks. These include analyzing raw data to produce reports with charts, building financial models with working formulas, and converting documents from one format to another, such as a PDF into a slide deck. As ZDNet reports, this eliminates the need for users to copy and paste content from the chatbot into other applications.
To achieve this, Anthropic has given Claude access to a private computing environment where it can write and execute code. The new capability is available as a preview for users on Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, with access for Pro subscribers planned for the coming weeks. It must be manually activated as an experimental feature in the user’s settings.
The company advises caution when using the new tool. Since it gives Claude internet access to create and analyze files, Anthropic warns this “may put your data at risk”. Users are encouraged to “monitor chats closely” when the feature is active. Completed files can be downloaded or saved directly to Google Drive.
