Anthropic has introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard designed to connect AI assistants with various data sources. The protocol aims to enable AI models to access information from business tools, software systems, and content repositories through a standardized interface.
The company has released pre-built MCP servers for common enterprise systems including Google Drive, Slack, and GitHub. According to Anthropic, early adopters of the protocol include Block and Apollo, while development tool providers such as Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph are working on integrating MCP support into their platforms.
The protocol allows developers to build two-way connections between data sources and AI applications through MCP servers and clients. While currently primarily used with Anthropic’s Claude model, the company states that MCP is designed to work with any AI model and is being developed as a collaborative, open-source project to promote broader adoption.
