A model update to ChatGPT reshuffled nearly half of all source citations in German-language answers within 48 hours, behaving like a Google core update for generative AI. Johannes Beus reports for Sistrix that the switch from GPT-5 mini to GPT-5.5 on 23 May 2026 caused a 47 percent shift in which domains ChatGPT cited, based on an analysis of 3.8 million ChatGPT answers.
Sistrix tracked this using its AI Visibility Index, measuring daily samples of 100,000 German-language ChatGPT responses across 38 days. On a typical day, citation patterns shift by just 1 to 2 percent. The jump to 47 percent on 23 May stands in a category of its own.
German publishers gained, global platforms lost
The update produced clear winners and losers. German news outlets and service brands gained citations significantly. Welt.de rose 99 percent, FAZ.net 124 percent, and Bild.de 83 percent. Streaming and sports platforms such as Sky.de, Joyn.de, DAZN, and Kicker.de also saw large increases.
International aggregators lost ground sharply. Indeed dropped 47 percent, Tripadvisor 53 percent, Expedia 60 percent, and Mobile.de 66 percent. Global platforms including YouTube, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Google.com each fell between 14 and 22 percent.
Reddit was the single largest gainer in absolute numbers, adding over 7,000 citations per 10,000 answers despite being an English-language platform. Sistrix suggests its user-generated discussions are rated highly relevant regardless of language.
What this means for visibility strategies
Sistrix draws a direct parallel to SEO practice. Just as Google core updates create overnight winners and losers, ChatGPT model changes do the same for generative AI visibility. The report notes that it is not possible to determine from outside whether the model change alone caused the shift, or whether retrieval and prompt layers were also modified at the same time.
For brands targeting German-speaking audiences, Sistrix concludes that localized content and established authority in the German market now matter for ChatGPT visibility just as they do for traditional search.
