Alibaba launches new AI image generator

Alibaba has unveiled Qwen VLo, a new AI model that generates and modifies images from text prompts and existing visuals. The Chinese e-commerce giant introduced the technology as part of its aggressive expansion into AI services, according to Bloomberg reporter Luz Ding. The model can create images from text descriptions like “generate a picture of a cute cat” or modify existing images by adding elements such as “add a cap on the cat’s head.” Qwen VLo features progressive generation technology, allowing users to watch the image creation process in real time. The launch positions Alibaba to compete directly with OpenAI’s visual AI tools and domestic rivals like DeepSeek. CEO Eddie Wu previously stated that artificial general intelligence has become the company’s “primary objective,” marking a strategic shift from its traditional e-commerce focus.
