Google is expanding its Gemini Spark assistant with a new macOS app, additional app connections and real time topic tracking. Adam Coimbra and Srinivasan (Cheenu) Venkatachary write for The Keyword that the updates aim to help users automate repetitive tasks across their desktop and favorite apps.
Spark arrives on the Mac
The new Gemini macOS app lets Spark handle file management directly, such as sorting PDFs in a Downloads folder into designated locations. It can also combine desktop files with Google Workspace data, for example building a budget spreadsheet from saved invoices and scheduling regular updates. Google says Spark only accesses files users explicitly authorize. A remote feature is coming soon, allowing users to assign multi step tasks from their phone, such as locating a sales report on their Mac and emailing a summary, while the Mac executes the task unattended. The macOS beta is currently limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in the US, available at gemini.google/mac.
More connected apps and real time alerts
- Google Tasks and Google Keep integration, turning notes into action items
- New connections with Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals
- Support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) connections
These app integrations roll out over the coming week on web and mobile, with macOS support following later. Spark also gains real time monitoring, tracking news, sports results, stock prices and shopping updates, and notifying users automatically instead of requiring manual checks.
