Google has expanded its Veo 3.1 AI video generation platform with improvements to image-based video creation and native vertical video support. The company has updated its Ingredients to Video tool, which allows users to generate videos from up to three reference images.
According to Google, the updated tool produces more consistent character appearances across different clips and environments. Users can now reuse objects, backgrounds, and textures across multiple scenes. The company claims the update enables more expressive and creative videos with richer dialogue and storytelling.
Veo 3.1 now supports vertical video output in 9:16 aspect ratio for platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Google has also added 4K upscaling capabilities, improving on the previous 1080p limit. The company states that 1080p generation quality has also been enhanced. These features are available in the Gemini app and are being integrated into YouTube Shorts and the YouTube Create app.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that creators will soon be able to generate Shorts using AI versions of themselves. The company has not disclosed how this feature will work or when it will launch. YouTube spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle confirmed more details will follow.
