Perplexity will integrate Getty Images’ visual content into its AI-powered search platform through a multi-year licensing agreement. Kritika Lamba reports for Reuters.
Getty will provide images via API integration, allowing Perplexity to access licensed visuals with proper attribution and source links. The deal sent Getty’s shares 5% higher.
The partnership comes as AI companies face mounting legal pressure over copyright infringement. Getty previously sued Stability AI for image scraping, while Perplexity has been targeted by publishers including Japan’s Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun. Perplexity has responded by launching a revenue-sharing model with outlets like TIME and Der Spiegel.
Mark Lemley, director of Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology, notes that licensing deals may undermine AI companies’ fair-use defenses in court. He adds that the licensing model cannot scale to cover all internet content needed for AI training.
