OpenAI makes ChatGPT Projects available to free users

OpenAI has expanded its ChatGPT Projects feature to free users after previously restricting it to paid subscribers. The feature allows users to organize AI conversations around specific topics and set custom instructions for responses.

Ian Carlos Campbell from Engadget reports that free users can now upload five files per project, while Plus subscribers get 25 files and Pro subscribers receive 40 files.

The rollout includes customization options for project colors and icons across all user tiers. OpenAI has consistently moved premium features to free accounts over time, including Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice. This strategy offers limited versions of paid features to encourage free users to upgrade.

Projects are currently available on the web platform and Android app. The iOS version will receive the update in the coming days, according to OpenAI.
