Proton launches a privacy-focused AI chatbot

Proton has released a new AI assistant named Lumo, designed to prioritize user privacy. The chatbot can summarize documents, write emails, and generate code while storing data locally on a user’s device. According to an article by Emma Roth for The Verge, Proton uses “zero-access” encryption. This method gives users an exclusive key to their content, preventing anyone else, including Proton, from accessing the information. The company states this ensures data is not used for advertising or training models.

Proton positions Lumo as an alternative to AI from major tech companies. The service runs on several open-source language models hosted on Proton’s servers in Europe. Lumo is available on the web and through mobile apps, offering a free version with limits and a paid subscription for unlimited use.
