Washington Post partners with OpenAI to feature content in ChatGPT

The Washington Post has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI to make its journalism accessible through ChatGPT. According to Todd Spangler’s article for Variety, the agreement will allow ChatGPT to display summaries, quotes, and links to Washington Post reporting in response to relevant search queries. The deal covers content across politics, global affairs, business, and technology sectors, with clear attribution and direct links to full articles. Peter Elkins-Williams, head of global partnerships at the Post, emphasized their commitment to meeting audiences wherever they consume content. OpenAI reports that ChatGPT serves over 500 million weekly users. This partnership joins similar agreements OpenAI has with more than 20 news publishers, including News Corp, Associated Press, and Financial Times, while other organizations like The New York Times have chosen to sue OpenAI over copyright concerns.
