Anthropic CEO predicts genius-level AI by 2026

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that artificial intelligence will reach the collective intelligence level of “a country of geniuses” within two years. According to an article by Michael Nuñez in VentureBeat, Amodei criticized the recent AI Action Summit in Paris as a “missed opportunity” for establishing effective AI governance. He specifically pointed to 2026 or 2027 as the timeline for this breakthrough.

The CEO emphasized three main concerns: maintaining democratic leadership in AI development, managing security risks, and preparing for economic disruption. He stressed the importance of preventing authoritarian countries from gaining military dominance through AI technology.

Anthropic has taken steps toward transparency by launching its Economic Index to monitor AI’s impact on labor markets. This initiative contrasts with the more secretive approaches of other AI companies.

The Paris summit revealed divisions in international AI regulation approaches, with the United States and United Kingdom declining to sign the summit’s commitments. U.S. Vice President JD Vance rejected European regulatory proposals, describing them as excessive and restrictive.

Amodei’s timeline suggests current governance structures may be insufficient for managing next-generation AI systems. His warning highlights the urgent need for establishing effective international controls before AI capabilities advance beyond regulatory reach.
