OpenAI expands visibility of o3-mini AI model’s reasoning process

OpenAI has updated its o3-mini AI model to provide users with more detailed insights into its reasoning steps. The change affects both free and paid users of ChatGPT, as reported by Kyle Wiggers for TechCrunch. The enhanced “chain of thought” feature aims to help users better understand how the model arrives at its answers. While not revealing the complete reasoning process, OpenAI has implemented a balance that shows more detailed summaries of the model’s thinking steps. The company’s spokesperson explained that a new post-processing step reviews and simplifies the chain of thought while removing unsafe content. This update also enables non-English users to receive reasoning explanations in their native languages. The change comes partly in response to competition from rivals like DeepSeek, whose R1 model shows its complete thought process.
