Google has invested an additional $1 billion in AI company Anthropic, according to a Financial Times report by George Hammond, Madhumita Murgia, and Arash Massoudi. This new investment builds on Google’s previous $2 billion commitment to the AI startup. Anthropic, known for its Claude AI models, is approaching a $60 billion valuation and is close to securing another $2 billion from venture capital investors led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company’s revenue reached an annualized $1 billion in December, representing a tenfold increase from the previous year. The investment is part of Google’s strategy to strengthen its position in the competitive AI market, where it faces rivals like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, focuses on AI safety and developing advanced AI capabilities.
