More than 10,500 creative professionals, including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, actress Julianne Moore and ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus, have issued a joint statement warning against the unlicensed use of their work by AI companies. As Dan Milmo reports in The Guardian, the signatories describe the unauthorized use of creative work to train AI models as a “huge, unfair threat” to artists’ livelihoods. British composer and former AI manager Ed Newton-Rex organized the initiative, criticizing the fact that AI companies spend millions on staff and technology, but want to use the training data for free. Authors such as John Grisham and George R.R. Martin, as well as major music labels such as Universal Music Group, are already suing AI companies for alleged copyright infringement.
