Black Forest Labs has released FLUX 3 Image Klein, a 5.6-billion-parameter open-weights model for generating and editing images. The company positions it as a model that can bring high-end image workflows to consumer hardware, including laptops and PCs with smaller graphics cards.
Black Forest Labs announces in an official blog post that the model supports text-to-image generation, image editing, and work with up to 10 reference images. It also supports 4K output, bounding boxes for placing or editing specific areas, and a pixel restoration feature in its API that is intended to preserve untouched parts of an image.
The release includes two versions. A base model targets teams that want to fine-tune the system for their own visual styles or use cases. A step-distilled version is designed to create images with lower latency. Black Forest Labs also provides FP8, INT8, and NVFP4 builds, which use reduced numerical precision to lower hardware requirements.
Designed for local workflows
According to the company, the INT8 version can run on Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs with 8GB of video memory through ComfyUI or Diffusers. The weights require 11.2GB in BF16 or 5.6GB in FP8. On an RTX 5090, the company says the distilled model produces a one-megapixel image in about four seconds. It reports less than nine seconds on an RTX 4070.
Black Forest Labs says its internal tests place Klein ahead of several larger open-weights models in text-to-image generation, multi-reference tasks, and editing. These comparisons have not been independently verified. The company also says the model is available through its API from $0.009 per 1,000-pixel image.
The weights use the FLUX Kommunity License. It permits free commercial use for individuals and companies with annual revenue below $5 million. Larger organizations need a self-hosted commercial license or API access.
