Instagram targets AI influencers that hide behind human looking profiles

Instagram will reduce the reach of accounts built around AI generated people if they do not identify themselves with a new “AI-generated profile” label. The rule targets profiles that can appear to feature a real person but actually use a synthetic persona. Karissa Bell reports for Engadget that creators who believe Instagram has penalized them by mistake can appeal through the platform’s Account Status dashboard.

The new label replaces Instagram’s optional “AI creator” tag. That older label applied broadly to profiles that regularly posted AI content. The replacement has a narrower purpose: it is designed for accounts that feature an AI-generated person.

Instagram says users have told the company they dislike discovering that an apparently human profile is actually powered by AI. The company has not said exactly how much it will lower the distribution of accounts that fail to add the designation. It describes the potential limits as something that may be introduced soon.

Focus on deceptive personas

The policy does not amount to a general restriction on AI-generated images, videos, or text. Instead, it addresses a category that can be especially difficult for audiences to recognize: virtual influencers and other fictional identities presented in a human style.

Such profiles have become more common as image and video generation tools produce increasingly convincing people. Investigations cited by Engadget have identified AI influencers promoting apps, brands, and wellness advice. Some wellness accounts have reportedly claimed medical credentials, raising concerns about misleading information even where posts do not clearly violate platform rules.

For marketers and content teams, the change creates a clearer disclosure requirement for campaigns using a recurring synthetic character. Accounts centered on an AI persona will need the profile label, rather than relying only on disclosure in individual posts. Instagram’s approach also signals that transparency may affect distribution, not just audience trust.
