Use of generative AI grows rapidly

Generative AI seems to be spreading faster than previous technological innovations such as the PC or the Internet. A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Vanderbilt University, and Harvard Kennedy School shows that 39.4% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 are already using generative AI, 28% of them in the workplace.

The use of AI is widespread across all industries. Even 20% of workers without a college degree use it regularly. However, the researchers warn that greater use by younger, better-educated, and higher-income workers could exacerbate existing inequalities in the labor market. The study estimates that generative AI currently supports 0.5% to 3.5% of all U.S. hours worked and could increase labor productivity by 0.125% to 0.875%.
