Claude Code sessions can now talk to each other

Anthropic has introduced cross-session messaging for Claude Code, allowing separate AI coding sessions on the same computer to exchange short updates, findings and requests while work is in progress.

The feature is available from Claude Code version 2.1.224 on macOS and Linux. It is designed for people running several sessions in parallel, for example on separate parts of a software project or in different worktrees. A session can alert another one about a breaking change, share a decision or ask whether a long-running task has finished.

Users do not need to write the message manually. They can tell Claude what another session needs to know, and Claude Code identifies a reachable session and sends a text summary. The system does not transfer chat histories, files or other full context. Anthropic’s documentation says users should resume a session instead when they need to continue a complete conversation elsewhere.

Controls remain with the receiving session

The feature includes safeguards around permissions and configuration. Messages cannot approve permission requests, alter settings or execute commands embedded in their text. If a request requires access to files, tools or other restricted actions, the receiving session still follows its own permission rules.

Sessions can be configured to accept, hold or refuse incoming messages. Held messages require approval in interactive sessions. Organisations can also disable the ability to send, list or receive cross-session messages through managed settings.

Communication between sessions on one machine uses a local socket rather than Anthropic’s servers. Sessions on other machines, connected through Remote Control, can receive replies but cannot be contacted to start a new exchange. The feature is unavailable on native Windows and on several cloud providers, including Amazon Bedrock and Microsoft Foundry.
