Report: OpenAI plans puck-sized AI speaker priced above $300

OpenAI is reportedly developing a screenless, battery-powered AI speaker with a circular design, moving components and a planned price of $300 to $400. Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg that the product is expected to launch in 2027, citing people familiar with the confidential work.

The device is said to resemble a doughnut or hockey puck and to fit easily in one hand. It would function as an AI-first computer rather than a conventional smart speaker, relying on voice conversations similar to ChatGPT’s voice mode. OpenAI reportedly intends to use more capable models to make exchanges feel more natural and to let the device adapt to a user over time.

Microphones and speaker grilles would support voice commands, while lights and self-moving parts would signal when the system is listening or responding. The product may also include cameras and other sensors to understand its surroundings and provide visual context to the AI. Users could hold it, place it on a bedside table or use it on a kitchen counter, according to the report.

OpenAI is developing the device with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom design studio. The company acquired Ive’s hardware startup last year. Bloomberg reports that the speaker is expected to use premium materials, including high-quality metal, helping explain its proposed price above most smart speakers.

The project is also entangled in a legal dispute with Apple. Apple has alleged that OpenAI improperly sought access to a confidential metal-finishing process through an Apple supplier. OpenAI denies misusing Apple’s intellectual property and says its product is fundamentally different. A court injunction sought by Apple could affect the launch timetable, though Bloomberg reports that OpenAI continues development.
