ChatGPT Work is an agent for complex, multi-step office tasks

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Work, a new agent built into ChatGPT that takes on entire projects instead of just answering prompts, the company announces in an official blog post. Ina Fried and Madison Mills report for Axios that the tool is powered by OpenAI’s newly released GPT-5.6 model family.

From answering to doing

ChatGPT Work gathers information across connected apps and workflows to produce finished materials such as spreadsheets, slides, documents, and web apps. It can stay on a task for hours, breaking a project into smaller steps and completing them independently. The feature builds on Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent. According to OpenAI, more than five million people already use Codex weekly, and over one million of them now apply it to tasks outside software development.

Users can hand ChatGPT Work entire workflows in a single request, for example turning customer research into a marketing brief, then using that brief to create campaign assets. Scheduled Tasks let it keep working while a user is away, such as converting new Slack or Microsoft Teams messages into updated documents.

Early results from companies

OpenAI cites several early users. Zapier’s Angela Ferrante says the tool built a system for reviewing thousands of leads monthly, uncovering seven figures in missed pipeline. At RingCentral, Vaneet Seth used it to automate launch checks, expanding his support from one product manager to roughly fifty. Virgin Atlantic’s Nathan Bolt compressed weeks of competitive analysis into hours for the airline’s five-year plan. At NVIDIA, Will Daney says the tool cut prep time for the company’s GTC conference by automating a workflow that previously consumed 40 percent of his schedule.

OpenAI also reports internal use: sales teams turned a discovery call into a tailored proof of concept within 24 hours, and finance teams reduced month-end close from days to hours.

Availability and controls

ChatGPT Work rolls out today for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users on web and mobile, with Plus and Business following within days. On desktop, Chat, Work, and Codex are available on every plan, including Free, for Mac and Windows. The Codex app merges into the new ChatGPT desktop app, and OpenAI will begin retiring its standalone Atlas browser in favor of a built-in browser inside ChatGPT.

Enterprise and Edu admins keep central control over data access, connected tools, and permitted actions. OpenAI says an “auto-review” system, which checks sensitive actions before execution, blocked 100 percent of attempts to extract protected data during adversarial testing.
