Notion kills its AI email app after just one year

Notion is shutting down Notion Mail, its AI-powered email client, on September 22. Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac that the service launched only in April 2025 and will be discontinued across web, desktop, and iOS just over a year later.

Notion cited shifting user behavior as the main reason for the decision. According to the company, more than half of Notion Mail users now manage their emails without ever opening the inbox, relying instead on Notion’s AI agents to handle email workflows automatically.

In its statement, Notion said: “As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we’ve seen more users hand off email workflows to them. So, we’re going all in on using agents to run your inbox.”

What users need to do before September 22

  • Export Notion Mail data through the app or on the web.
  • Save drafts and scheduled emails by September 21. These will not carry over automatically.
  • Export snippets and auto labels if needed. Emails in Gmail will remain untouched.

Any data not exported by September 21 will be permanently deleted when the service shuts down the following day.

Notion Mail connected to Gmail and offered AI features such as automatic labeling and smart replies. The shutdown reflects a broader trend in productivity software: rather than building dedicated interfaces, companies are betting on AI agents that work behind the scenes. For content professionals who rely on email tools, this is a reminder that AI-powered apps can disappear quickly, even when they seem well-established.
