OpenAI is planning a major overhaul of ChatGPT, transforming the chatbot into a so-called “superapp” that bundles coding tools, AI agents, and partner services into a single platform. Bipasha Dey reports for Reuters, citing a Financial Times story based on more than a dozen current and former OpenAI employees.
The redesign will give greater prominence to Codex, OpenAI’s coding product. Updates will roll out in the coming weeks, initially appearing as changes to ChatGPT’s website and mobile apps.
Enterprise clients in focus
The overhaul is part of a broader shift in strategy. OpenAI is redirecting resources toward enterprise clients and stepping up competition with rival Anthropic. The company currently counts 2 million business customers, who account for around 40% of its revenue. OpenAI expects that share to grow to 50% by the end of the year.
To attract more users, OpenAI is redesigning ChatGPT’s interface with new prompts that steer people toward coding tools, image generation, and partner services including Canva and Booking.com.
Most Codex users are already paying customers, according to the Financial Times report.
IPO in sight
The changes come as OpenAI prepares for a potential stock market listing. Reuters previously reported that the company was working on a confidential IPO filing in the United States. CEO Sam Altman has said OpenAI will go public when the timing makes sense, without committing to a specific schedule.
ChatGPT currently serves more than 900 million weekly active users and has surpassed 50 million consumer subscribers, according to figures OpenAI released earlier this year. Reuters could not immediately verify the details in the Financial Times report. OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment.
