Spotify enters AI podcast and audiobook creation

Spotify has announced two new AI-powered tools aimed at audio creation: a desktop app for generating personal podcasts and an audiobook creation tool built in partnership with voice AI company ElevenLabs.

The new desktop app, called Studio by Spotify Labs, lets users generate podcasts based on personal data such as emails, calendar entries, and travel bookings. An integrated agent browses the web and pulls in personal information to build audio content on request. For example, a user can ask the app to create a travel briefing for a road trip, complete with schedule details, restaurant recommendations, and podcast suggestions for the drive. All generated podcasts are saved privately to the user’s Spotify library and synced across devices. Spotify describes the app as an early preview and cautions that AI-generated content may contain errors.

The app is launching in research preview across more than 20 markets and is available to select users aged 18 and older. It positions Spotify as a direct competitor to Google’s NotebookLM, a tool that popularized AI-generated podcasts based on source material. Adobe and ElevenLabs are among other companies that have since adopted similar formats.

On the audiobook side, Spotify introduced a new ElevenLabs-powered creation tool within its Spotify for Authors platform. The tool will launch in beta in June on an invite-only basis, initially supporting English only. Authors who use it are not bound to an exclusive contract and can publish their audiobooks elsewhere. Spotify says it is also expanding the Spotify for Authors platform to support 10 additional languages, including French, German, Dutch, and several Scandinavian languages.

Spotify reports that its Audiobook+ subscription service has passed one million subscribers and is on track to generate $100 million in annualized recurring revenue. The company says audiobook listening hours have grown 60 percent year over year.
