Lionsgate, the film studio behind “The Hunger Games” and “John Wick,” plans to use generative artificial intelligence in the production of new movies and TV shows. As Jessica Toonkel reports for the Wall Street Journal, the company has struck a deal with AI startup Runway. Lionsgate will give Runway access to its content library in exchange for a custom AI model. The model will be used initially for internal purposes such as storyboarding, and later for backgrounds and special effects. Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, expects the deal to save millions of dollars. The decision follows discussions in the industry about the use of AI and copyright protection.
