Google’s new tool lets AI agents take care of your emails and edit your documents

Google has released an open-source command-line interface (CLI) that gives AI agents direct access to its Workspace suite, including Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Drive and Calendar. Carl Franzen reports for VentureBeat that the tool, called googleworkspace/cli, is designed for both human developers and automated AI agents.

The CLI allows developers to interact with all major Workspace applications through a single, unified terminal interface. Previously, connecting AI tools to Workspace typically required third-party services like Zapier. The new tool removes that dependency.

The project is available on GitHub and can be installed with a single command. It produces structured data output, which makes it easier for AI agents to process results and take action. The repository includes more than 100 prebuilt agent skills covering Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar and Sheets.

Importantly, the tool does not bypass Google’s existing security and permission controls. Users still need a Google Cloud account and valid credentials to authenticate.

Google Cloud director Addy Osmani has described the tool as “built for humans and agents.” However, the project’s documentation clearly states it is “not an officially supported Google product” and warns that breaking changes are likely before version 1.0.

Enterprises should treat this as a promising but experimental tool. Security teams should review permission settings carefully before any wider deployment.
