OpenAI has released updates to deep research in ChatGPT, introducing features that give users more control over how the AI conducts investigations and compiles reports.
The tool now allows users to focus research on specific websites and a broader range of connected applications as trusted sources. According to OpenAI, this helps produce more accurate and credible reports.
Deep research works by having users describe their desired outcome and select which sources the system can access. These sources include websites, uploaded files, and connected apps such as Google Drive, SharePoint, FactSet, PitchBook, or Scholar Gateway. ChatGPT then creates a research plan that users can review and modify before work begins.
A key new feature lets users track progress and adjust direction while research is running. Users can interrupt the process at any time to refine focus or change which sources the system can access. OpenAI has also redesigned the interface with a new sidebar entry point and fullscreen report view.
Completed reports include citations and source links for verification. Users can download results in multiple formats including Markdown, Word, and PDF. Each report contains a table of contents, a sources section, and an activity history showing research progression.
The updates rolled out to Plus and Pro users first, with Free and Go users receiving access in the following days. Enterprise administrators can control access through role-based access control.
