Google’s PaLiGemma 2 AI claims to detect human emotions

Google has announced a new AI model called PaLiGemma 2 that reportedly can identify human emotions in images, according to tech journalist Kyle Wiggers writing for TechCrunch. The system requires specific fine-tuning to perform emotion recognition and has sparked concern among AI ethics experts. Sandra Wachter, professor at the Oxford Internet Institute, warns that attempting to read people’s emotions through AI is deeply problematic, while researchers emphasize that emotion detection lacks scientific validity. The technology builds on disputed psychological theories and could perpetuate bias, particularly against marginalized groups. Despite Google’s claims of extensive testing for fairness, experts worry about potential misuse in sensitive areas like employment, law enforcement, and border control, with the EU already moving to restrict such technology in certain contexts.
