Apple’s AI news summaries face continued criticism over accuracy

Apple is under pressure to withdraw its AI-powered news summary feature after generating multiple false news alerts. According to a report by Zoe Kleinman, Liv McMahon and Natalie Sherman for the BBC, the feature has created entirely fabricated claims when attempting to summarize breaking news notifications. Former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger called the technology “out of control” and urged its immediate removal. The feature, part of Apple Intelligence, incorrectly reported several events, including false claims about sports results and personal lives of public figures. The BBC and other news organizations have complained about their journalism being misrepresented. Apple has acknowledged the issues and announced plans to update the software to clearly indicate AI-generated summaries, while maintaining that the feature remains optional and in beta testing.
