Google and Mistral AI sign content deals with major news agencies

Major technology companies Google and Mistral AI have announced separate partnerships with leading news agencies to enhance their AI chatbot services. Google has entered an agreement with The Associated Press (AP) to incorporate real-time news feeds into its Gemini app, while Paris-based Mistral AI has partnered with Agence France-Presse (AFP) to improve its Le Chat chatbot.

The agreement between Mistral AI and AFP will give Le Chat access to AFP’s archive dating back to 1983, allowing it to draw from approximately 2,300 daily stories in six languages including Arabic, English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The deal excludes photos and videos, focusing solely on text content. AFP chairman Fabrice Fries indicated that this partnership helps diversify the agency’s revenue sources, particularly following Meta’s recent termination of its third-party fact-checking program.

Google’s collaboration with AP builds upon their existing relationship in Google Search, now extending to provide current information for the Gemini app. According to AP Senior Vice President Kristin Heitmann, the partnership emphasizes AP’s commitment to nonpartisan reporting in the development of generative AI products. Both partnerships aim to improve the accuracy and timeliness of AI-generated responses while providing financial support to news organizations and addressing potential copyright concerns.
