Chegg sues Google over AI search summaries hurting website traffic

Chegg has filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that Google’s AI Overviews feature in search results is damaging its business, CNBC reports. The online education company alleges that Google uses Chegg’s proprietary content without compensation and that AI-generated summaries appearing above regular search results are reducing traffic to its website. According to the lawsuit filed in federal district court, Google has trained its AI models on Chegg’s database of 135 million questions and answers. The education platform reports a 24% decline in revenue and a 21% drop in student subscriptions. Google defended its position, stating that AI Overviews actually help send traffic to a broader range of websites. The lawsuit cites violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act and references a recent federal ruling that confirmed Google’s search market monopoly.
